The official noted that his outlet saw a 20% increase in sales on all outdoor equipment last summer compared to 2012 figures.

“Many outdoor competitions attract residents to try out exciting physical activities such as cycling,” said the manager, who also joins the Qatar Chain Reaction (QCR) bike races in Duhail, Dukhan and Lusail.

The number of bikers participating in these events has doubled in recent months, from 50 to 100 people. This was due to the races and events held almost every two weeks during the second week of October until this month.

Some groups organize weekly walks at night or often early in the morning on Fridays in summer.

The manager expects their sales to increase this year, citing Qatar’s growing population and the country’s vision to become an international sports center.

While the demand for some outdoor sports equipment is expected to decline in the coming weeks, the demand for indoor and water sports equipment has started to increase.

“Our bicycle sales have dropped from 40 units per week to 29 this month, but people are now buying treadmills and ellipticals ranging from 2,500 to 10,000 QR,” he noted.

The company and its competitors have started offering more indoor and water sports equipment in their Doha stores. Kayaking, wakeboarding and jet skiing are among the favorite activities of some Qatari and European expats, which mainly take place at the Sealine Beach Resort in Mesaieed, on Katara Beach and the Corniche, and at Old Reef.

Many sports stores run out of suits and belts for taekwondo and mixed martial arts, which are a big hit with children and adults.

As total sales in the summer increase, the manager pointed out that their income in the winter remains considerably high given the weather lends itself well to almost any type of sporting activity, whether indoor or outdoor.

Besides tournaments and other competitions, Qatar’s widely celebrated National Sports Day in February also encouraged many residents to get involved in various physical activities.
