Philadelphia Eagles donate women’s sports equipment, launch high school girl flag football league

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – This is the first team in the NFL to support young girls in this way.

The Philadelphia Eagles donate women’s sports equipment to female student-athletes in the city, while launching a women’s flag football league in high schools. The aim is to give girls more opportunities to play sports, including a sport traditionally considered a male sport.

“It’s a chance to truly be the first, to be the first in the league to support girls and women in this capacity,” said Jen Kavanagh, senior vice president of marketing and media for the Eagles. .

The Eagles announced earlier this week that they were launching an all-girls high school soccer league this spring and selecting 15 schools based on a level of interest in public and Catholic schools across the city for an eight-game season. .

Because girls don’t traditionally play these types of contact sports, Kavanagh says it’s important to involve girls in programs like this.

“Traditionally, there is a lack of access and for us, we make sure that girls and women, who are passionate about sport or working in sport, have the opportunity to do so,” he said. she declared.

In addition to creating the league, the team goes even further. With the help of the NFL Foundation, they purchased $100,000 worth of sports bras for girls in need and 6,000 sports bras will be donated to every female athlete in the school district who needs them. of Philadelphia.

“In our minds this is essential equipment and should be part of the consideration given to young girls as a need that provides that level of comfort, confidence and safety and to compete and have a good time. “, said Kavanagh.

Each school participating in the flag football league will receive personalized Nike uniforms, as well as a port-a-field.

Teams can even play one of their games at Lincoln Financial Field.
