Report: US Sports Equipment Sales Rise in 2021
The U.S. outdoor and sports industry sectors have seen all-time highs over the past year and a half, according to The NPD Group.
As consumers sought refuge outside during the pandemic, sales of equipment at retail sports stores rose 23% in the first half of 2021, compared to the same pre-pandemic period in 2019. Gains of 17% in brick-and-a-box contributed to this performance. retail sales of mortar stores and a 31% increase in e-commerce, in the combined categories of camping, rock climbing, water sports, protective gear and accessories.
A dive into the distribution of retail channels reveals that sales growth in several categories of accessories and accessories at specialty outlets has overtaken regional and national retailers. In the specialty market, sports supports grew by 100% and shelters by 76% in the first half of the year compared to 2019. In the specialty market, growth was also faster: personal flotation devices, wetsuits and other water sports clothing; camp accessories, including portable heaters, showers and toilets, and sleeping bag accessories such as blankets and liners, as well as tools and coolers.
“The areas where specialty retail seems to be really thriving today are in the complementary categories related to improving comfort and convenience,” says Dirk Sorenson, Sports Industry Analyst, NPD. “After making the basic and fundamental investments to go outdoors, consumers are now turning to the expertise of specialty outlets and their vendors to extend the experience and make it more comfortable. ”
